Pain Treatment for patients with Opioid Use Disorder

This learning series is comprised of three recorded vignettes that will explore pain management considerations for individuals with or with a history of substance use disorders.

Each recorded vignette is a different topic and is available for on demand viewing and enduring continuing education credits.

Successful completion includes:

  • Access the MI-CCSI Learning Management System.
  • Create a New User Profile (if a new learner to the system).
  • Participate in each desired learning activity.
  • Complete the course evaluation after each to obtain continuing education credits.

Session#1: Understanding Opioid Use Disorder & Treatment Options

This session will review care approaches for pain management of patients with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). The session will include the definitions of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and Substance Use Disorders (SUD), treatment options like methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone, and includes a detailed case study of a patient presenting with acute pain after a fall.

Total time: 15 minutes

Objectives:

  1. Review the definition of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and SUD
  2. Review the types of treatment
  3. Review case study presentation and application.

Session#2: Managing Pain & Expectations With Surgeries

This session will explore approaches for setting and managing patient expectations, communication strategies, and non-opioid therapy options.

Total time: 15 minutes

Objectives:

  1. Review approaches to set patient expectations
  2. Review case study presentation and application.

Session#3: Team Approach & Pain Management Without Opioids

This session will examines types of types of pain and pain management strategies for individuals with opioid use disorder, emphasizing a team-based approach.

Total time: 15 minutes

Objectives:

  1. Review the different types of pain and alternatives to medication for management
  2. Review the team approach to effectively managing pain care for individuals with or with a history of SUD/OUD.

This learning series is intended for primary care providers, advanced practice providers and nurses.

The AAFP has reviewed Pain Treatment with SUD, and deemed it acceptable for AAFP credit. Term of approval is from 08/30/2025 to 08/30/2026. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This course is approved for up to 0.75 AAFP Prescribed credits.

AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 credit(s)™ toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. When applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be reported as Prescribed, not as Category 1.

Nursing Credit: Nurses can use the AAFP CME toward their State of Michigan licensure renewal requirements. Information on this can be found on the LARA website and through the Michigan Nurses Association (MNA) at Michigan Nursing Licensure Renewal Info
