During this six part learning series, the participant will explore considerations when diagnosing, monitoring and treating individuals with a history of various substance abuse.

Each recorded vignette is a different topic and is available for on demand viewing and enduring continuing education credits.

Session #1: Rethinking ADHD Treatment in Primary Care

During this learning session, the participant will review the considerations of managing ADHD with the use of stimulants and an overview of the risk that can contribute to addiction.

Total time: 15 minutes

Objective:

  1. Identify the risks affiliated with prescribing stimulants for the treatment of ADHD.

Session #2: Benzodiazepine Use in SUD: Clinical Insights

During this learning session, the participant will identify the risks of prescribing benzodiazepine for a patient with a history of substance use disorder (SUD).

Total time: 15 minutes

Objective:

  1. Identify the risks of prescribing benzodiazepine for a patient with a history of substance use disorder (SUD).

Session #3: Unveiling Addiction: A Diagnostic Journey

During this learning session, the participant will review the challenges of diagnosing substance use disorder (SUD).

Total time: 15 minutes

Objective:

  1. Review the challenges of diagnosing SUD.

Session #4: Urine Drug Screens: Best Practices in Monitoring OUD

During this learning session, the participant will explore protocols and strategies for using urine drug screens in managing patients with opioid use disorder (OUD).

Total time: 15 minutes

Objectives:

  1. Review how the urine analysis results can be used when monitoring opioid use disorder.

Session #5: Navigating Addiction Discussions with Empathy

During this learning session, the participant will learn strategies for communicating with patients about addiction and substance use disorder. This session will cover considerations and examples of effective communication to address concerns of substance use with a patient.

Total time: 15 minutes

Objective:

  1. Identify communication skills to engage the patient resulting in an effective partnership when addressing the concerns of substance use.

Session #6: Strategies for OUD Treatment Success

During this learning session, the participant will explore a case study of managing a patient with multiple substance use and consider strategies for medication assisted treatment (MAT) and protocols for preventing relapse.

Total time: 15 minutes

Objective:

  1. Review effective treatment and communications to address relapse of opioid use when treating with buprenorphine.

Audience

This course is intended for care teams seeking to implement an approach to address substance use and alcohol use disorders through the Screening, Brief Interventions, and the Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) process.

Faculty

Edward Jouney, D.O., M.S.

Dr. Edward Jouney is an addiction and forensic psychiatrist and Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan (UM). He was a full-time faculty member in the UM Department of Psychiatry as an addiction psychiatrist from 2011 to 2021 and served as the Program Director for the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program from 2015 to 2021. In July 2021, Dr. Jouney left his UM faculty position to pursue a fellowship training program in Forensic Psychiatry at the University of Michigan, which he completed in June 2022. He now serves as a staff psychiatrist at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry (CFP) in Saline. In addition to his work at CFP, Dr. Jouney specializes in the evaluation of licensed healthcare professionals related to mental health or substance use concerns. Dr. Jouney received his D.O. degree at Michigan State University, College of Osteopathic Medicine, and completed residency training in Psychiatry at the University of Michigan. He is a member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry.

The AAFP has reviewed Series of case studies to consider when diagnosing, monitoring and treating individuals with a history of various substance abuse., and deemed it acceptable for AAFP credit. Term of approval is from 10/11/2024 to 10/10/2025. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity..

Credits Available:  up to 1.5 for completion of all six sessions.
