Behavioral Health Considerations for Treatment of Chronic Pain
During this 4-part learning learning series, the participant will explore the key behavioral health considerations when managing patients with chronic pain. Utilizing case studies, these short learning vignettes will explore strategies for addressing unhelpful beliefs and behaviors in patients with chronic pain, discuss key communication strategies, utilizing Behavioral Activation and Mindfulness in the treatment of chronic pain.
Each recorded vignette is a different topic and is available for on demand viewing and enduring continuing education credits.

Session #1: Key Behavioral Health Concepts for the Treatment of Chronic Pain
During this learning session, the participant will explore common unhelpful pain related beliefs and behaviors and how to promote a functional, engaged approach to pain management.
Total time: 15 minutes
Objective:
- Describe common unhelpful pain related beliefs and behaviors.
Session #2: Communication with Patients About Pain
During this learning session, the participant will review key communication strategies when working with patients experiencing chronic pain. The training emphasizes the importance of listening, managing patient expectations, providing effective education, and focusing on recovery and function rather than solely on relief.
Total time: 15 minutes
Objective:
- Review key topics to address when working with someone experiencing chronic pain.
Session #3: Utilizing Behavioral Activation
During this learning session, the participant will review key factors of depression and how to utilize Behavioral Activation to positively improve behavior.
Total time: 15 minutes
Objective:
- Understand the basic techniques of Behavioral Activation for use in depression associated with chronic pain.
Session #4: Introduction to Mindfulness in the Treatment of Pain
During this learning session, the participant will review how mindfulness can aid in the treatment of chronic pain by mitigating distress and promoting relaxation. This learning session also discusses various mindfulness practices and highlights their benefits through case study review.

- Describe the three main components of mindfulness.
Audience
The course is intended for providers, advanced practice providers, nurses and other care team members who are seeking to expand their knowledge and skills.
Faculty
Eric Lake, MA, LLP, CADCEric Lake is a psychologist who specializes in the treatment of chronic pain and works in the Mary Free Bed Pain Rehabilitation Program, an interdisciplinary program that addresses many pain conditions. He received his master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Western Michigan University and is a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor.

AAFP: The AAFP has reviewed Key Concepts for Managing Chronic Pain, and deemed it acceptable for AAFP credit. Term of approval is from 09/20/2024 to 09/19/2025. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
