Caring for Legacy Patients with Chronic Pain

This learning activity will utilize case studies to review treatment options and medical management considerations for chronic pain legacy patients (a patient whose care is taken over by a physician after treatment was initiated by another physician). This activity will include risk management for legacy prescriptions, (prescribing that continued beyond the usual length of time and are not discontinued after the usual recommended period) affiliated with chronic pain management.

Total time: 50 minutes

Objectives:

  1. Define what is meant by legacy patients and legacy prescribing
  2. Determine risks and benefits of maintaining previous plans of care versus making changes to plans of care
  3. Identify situations where involuntary tapering may be appropriate.

Audience

The course is intended for providers, advanced practice providers, nurses and other care team members who are seeking to expand their knowledge and skills.

Faculty

EVA Quirion, FNP-C, PhD

Dr. Quirion is a nurse practitioner and currently works as Medical Director for Pain and Recovery Care at St. Joseph Internal Medicine in Bangor, Maine. Since 2014, she has helped steer evidence-based practice and protocols for the management of patients with pain conditions and the management of patients who have substance use disorder. Eva has expertise in the management of controlled medications including initiation, monitoring, discontinuation, and tapering. Eva’s work centers on communication between providers and patients to bring better health and function for people with pain and for people with addiction.

Eva Quirion is a faculty member at The University of Maine School of Nursing Graduate School, educating the future generations of nurse practitioners.

She is a member of the Community Care Partnership of Maine Controlled Substance Stewardship Committee. She also serves as faculty for the Co-Occurring Collaborative serving Maine (CCSME) Maine Substance Use Learning Community. Eva is a member of the Maine Nurse Practitioner Association and invited speaker for the state’s annual NP conference.

This training is made available through a grant from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Through December 31, 2021 to assist those providing care, Mi-CCSI is extending and expanding its FREE on-line enduring disease management learning options. All enduring learning activities have nursing and social work continuing education available and are at NO COST to the participant.

AAFP: The AAFP has reviewed Caring for Legacy Patients and deemed it acceptable for up to 1.00 Enduring Materials, Self-Study AAFP Prescribed credit(s). Term of Approval is from 11/01/2024 to 10/31/2025.Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nurses:
Note: Nurses can use CME credits toward re-licensure.
