Importance of Screening for SUD and Management of Legacy Patients

During Part 2 of the two-part live virtual training course, the participant will be introduced to the the importance of regular screening for substance and alcohol use to detect risk, the importance of early intervention when risk is identified, and when taking over pain management from other providers, the importance of effective and empathic communication including how to have crucial conversations.

The integrity, commitment, and expertise of this nationally accredited faculty will empower the provider and clinical team with current knowledge, practical approaches and applicable tools and resources to manage this vulnerable and often very complex population.

Participants may choose to participate in one or both parts of this live training series

At the conclusion of Part 2, the participant will be able to:

  • Discuss the importance of assessing patients with chronic pain for alcohol and drug use and related disorders.
  • Describe how to manage patients with chronic pain with current or previous unhealthy drinking and drug use.
  • Name at least two major principles of how to approach conversations about controlled medications.
  • Have increased confidence in engaging patients in difficult conversations.
  • Define what is meant by legacy patient and legacy prescribing.

      Audience

      The course is intended for primary care providers, advanced practice providers, nurses, social workers, medical assistants, pharmacists and other clinical and non-clinical practice team members.

      Faculty

      EVA Quirion, FNP-C, PhD

      Dr. Quirion is a nurse practitioner and currently works as Medical Director for Pain and Recovery Care at St. Joseph Internal Medicine in Bangor, Maine. Since 2014, she has helped steer evidence-based practice and protocols for the management of patients with pain conditions and the management of patients who have substance use disorder. Eva has expertise in the management of controlled medications including initiation, monitoring, discontinuation, and tapering. Eva’s work centers on communication between providers and patients to bring better health and function for people with pain and for people with addiction.

      Eva Quirion is a faculty member at The University of Maine School of Nursing Graduate School, educating the future generations of nurse practitioners.

      She is a member of the Community Care Partnership of Maine Controlled Substance Stewardship Committee. She also serves as faculty for the Co-Occurring Collaborative serving Maine (CCSME) Maine Substance Use Learning Community. Eva is a member of the Maine Nurse Practitioner Association and invited speaker for the state’s annual NP conference.

      Richard Brown, MD, MPH

      Retired Full Professor with Tenure, Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin. He educated more than 2,000 UW health professions and participated in a program to evaluate the effectiveness of SBIRT in eight southeastern Wisconsin high schools. He served as Clinical Director for the Wisconsin Initiative to Promote Healthy Lifestyles (WIPHL) helping 40 general healthcare settings provide over 110,000 alcohol and drug screens and 25,000 interventions and elicit substantial declines in risky and problem drinking, emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and healthcare costs. Dr. Brown was president of the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse (AMERSA) and a founding director of Project MAINSTREAM, a federally funded program that enhanced substance abuse education for over 10,000 trainees. After leaving the UW in 2017, Dr. Brown served as a senior medical director and director of population health management for ConcertoHealth, which improved outcomes and reduced healthcare costs for complex, dual-eligible and Medicare Advantage patients.

      Continuing Education Credits

      Providers & Nurses

      This training will meet the continuing education requirements for pain and symptom management in the state of Michigan for medical license renewals and the LARA training requirements for providers prescribing opioids and other controlled substances.
      Providers & Nurses:
      An application has bee submitted to the AAFP for consideration.

      Nurses:
      Note: Nurses can use CME credits toward re-licensure.

      Full continuing education credits are achieved by the successful participation and completion of the required pretest, entire live training course, and all required post-tests and evaluations.
