Pragmatic Use of Cannabis Products Learning Series – Recorded (On Demand) Training
Pragmatic use of cannabis products for chronic pain
This learning series is comprised of five recorded vignettes that provide an overview of the history, legal aspects, risks, barriers, benefits, and tips toward the pragmatic use of cannabis products to manage chronic pain.
Each recorded vignette is a different topic and is available for on demand viewing and enduring continuing education credits. Please note, Social Workers must complete all vignettes in order to receive continuing education.
Session
Session#1: Pragmatic Use of Cannabis Products: Context, Definition, History, Legality
This session will provide an overview of the history and legal aspects for the use of cannabis products for pain management.

This session will explore how cannabinoids are often consumed and how they interact with the body.

Provide a high-level overview of how cannabinoids interact with the body, including risks, benefits, and ways that these compounds are often consumed.

Session#3: Pragmatic Use of Cannabis Products: Understanding Risks & Benefits from Clinical Trials & Naturalistic Trends
This session will review clinical trial and naturalistic trends of cannabis use.

Overview of the clinical trial and naturalistic use literature to identify key takeaways regarding the use of cannabis for pain.

This session will examine barriers that may prevent successfully engaging patient about cannabis.

This session will provide an overview of clinical practice guidelines to effectively engage with patients about cannabis use for pain management.

Audience
This learning series is intended for primary care providers, advanced practice providers, nurses, social workers, medical assistants, pharmacists and other clinical and non-clinical practice staff.
Participation in the live Treating Pain & Addiction course is recommended, but not required, prior to participation in this online learning activity.
Faculty
Kevin Boehnke, PhDKevin Boehnke is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and the Chronic Pain and Fatigue Research Center. Kevin received his doctorate from the University of Michigan School of Public Health in Environmental Health Sciences in 2017. He is also a yoga instructor. His research focuses on therapeutic applications of cannabis and psychedelics and addressing the public health harms caused by their criminalization.

This training is made available through a grant from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS
Providers & Nurses
AAFP: The AAFP has reviewed Pragmatic Use of Cannabis products for Chronic Pain, and deemed it acceptable for AAFP credit. Term of approval is from 01/15/2024 to 01/10/2025. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Nurses:
Note: Nurses can use CME credits toward re-licensure.
