Pain Treatment for patients with Opioid Use Disorder
This learning series is comprised of three recorded vignettes that will explore pain management considerations for individuals with or with a history of substance use disorders.
Each recorded vignette is a different topic and is available for on demand viewing and enduring continuing education credits.
Session
Session#1: Understanding Opioid Use Disorder & Treatment Options
This session will review care approaches for pain management of patients with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). The session will include the definitions of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and Substance Use Disorders (SUD), treatment options like methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone, and includes a detailed case study of a patient presenting with acute pain after a fall.

Session#2: Managing Pain & Expectations With Surgeries
This session will explore approaches for setting and managing patient expectations, communication strategies, and non-opioid therapy options.

Session#3: Team Approach & Pain Management Without Opioids
This session will examines types of types of pain and pain management strategies for individuals with opioid use disorder, emphasizing a team-based approach.

- Review the different types of pain and alternatives to medication for management /li>
- Review the team approach to effectively managing pain care for individuals with or with a history of SUD/OUD.

Audience
This learning series is intended for primary care providers, advanced practice providers and nurses.
Participation in the live Treating Pain & Addiction course is recommended, but not required, prior to participation in this online learning activity.
Faculty
EVA Quirion, FNP-C, PhDEva Quirion is a nurse practitioner specializing in the treatment of pain and substance use disorder. She works closely with patients and primary care providers to improve patient safety related to opioids. She is a member of the Maine Quality Counts Chronic Pain Collaborative, Penobscot Community Healthcare Controlled Substance Committee and Chair of the St. Joseph Bangor Controlled Substance Review Group.
Cost
This training is made available through a grant from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS
Providers & Nurses
AAFP: The AAFP has reviewed Pain Treatment with SUD, and deemed it acceptable for
AAFP credit. Term of approval is from 08/30/2024 to 08/29/2025. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Nurses:
Note: Nurses can use CME credits toward re-licensure.
